Tooth Pain?

Dr. Stephen Brown can perform careful, effective tooth extractions

When Is Tooth Extraction Required?

Patients of all ages may require a tooth extraction to improve their oral health. Reasons for needing a tooth extraction include having:

  • A baby tooth that has not fallen out before the permanent tooth erupts
  • One or more teeth crowded in an arch, causing pain and misalignment
  • A severe tooth infection that cannot be remedied through root canal therapy
  • A tooth that has endured severe decay or trauma that causes irreparable structural damage
  • Gum tissue that has receded to the point it can no longer support the adjacent tooth
  • A portion of damaged jaw bone that cannot support the nearby teeth

What Happens during Tooth Extraction?

Prior to extraction, Dr. Brown will administer a local anesthetic, and sedation if needed, to keep patients comfortable and relaxed. Next, he will gently rock the tooth back and forth within the socket to loosen it. He will then remove it using forceps. Finally, he will place gauze over the socket and have you bite down to facilitate blood clotting.

Regardless of the reason you require a tooth extraction, we can safely remove the tooth with little discomfort.

Most patients need a couple of days of recovery following a tooth extraction. We may provide pain medication to relieve any discomfort, and ice can be applied to minimize swelling.

Patients will need to wait 24 hours before brushing their teeth, and should avoid using a straw for at least two days. During recovery, patients should eat soft foods and avoid food or beverages that are hot.

How Are Extracted Teeth Replaced?

If you have a permanent tooth extracted, it is strongly recommended that it be replaced. Complications can occur when a tooth is removed without replacement solutions. In such instances patients may endure:

  • Shifting and misaligned teeth
  • Changes to bite patterns, which can wear teeth down or cause jaw discomfort
  • Changes to the facial structure, such as sunken cheeks
  • Developing temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder that can cause headaches and other types of pain
  • Losing jawbone mass due to a missing tooth root (roots help stimulate the jawbone)

To prevent escalating dental issues and to complete your smile, teeth can be replaced with traditional dental crowns, bridges, or dentures. The preferred tooth replacement solution is attaching prosthetics to dental implants. These titanium posts are surgically embedded into the jawbone to provide unparalleled durability for your artificial teeth for years to come, if not a lifetime.
